Chemist, physiologist, doctor and philosopher. He was one of the promoters of modern science.

Marble statue inaugurated 15 May 1889. As well as adding graffiti the local activists have removed a number of the letters from the text. However, at the time of writing, enough letters remain for the full text to be reconstructed. (This is like living archaeology.)
