Chemist, Industrialist, Belgian. At age 23 Ernest and his brother Alfred developed a new process for the industrial production of sodium carbonate. The exploitation of this process provided the basis for a large successful international company. Ernest Solvay implemented his progressive social ideals in his factories and when wealthy founded several scientific, philanthropic, and charitable foundations.
